Knut Lundmark: "Modest but very adversarial"
Knut Lundmark stands at the corner of the house with his heart pounding. The school is only a stone’s throw away, close enough to watch for movement down the hillside. Mother has just locked herself in her room, upset at his “ungodly” opinions. But that isn’t why his heart is pounding. No, it’s because of her.
Birgit Carlson, the young teacher, is both beautiful and bright. She’s 21, three years older than Knut and she’s also engaged, but that doesn’t matter. There’s something special about Birgit, something different. She answers back like no-one else but, more than that, she doesn’t quite fit it here, she’s a round peg in a square hole.
Just like him.
